3 Helpful Tips for Creating An Amazing Infographic

I made a rookie mistake. I spent not one but TWO precious days making an infographic. Follow these steps to not be like me! (plus you get to see my famous two dayer graphic)

1. Choose a great resource

One of the best favors you can do for yourself when it comes to infographics is to not start from scratch. Sure, we all consider ourselves creative to a degree. But c’mon, unless you are really willing to build a template from scratch, here are a few websites that can help you get started.

I personally favor Piktochart. I have used all three but Piktochart offers more templates with a lot of room for customization. Am I picking favorites? You bet!

2. Decide what your goal is

Is there something you have on your mind that you want to show? Try to narrow down exactly what you want to spend your time on. Having a game plan before starting an infographic can save you hours. Sometimes your idea will develop as you make your graphic and that is okay too. Remember that the more details you consider ahead of time, the less time it will take to create it.

3. Start small and finish strong

If you end up wanting to overload your graphic, start small that way you can build up your detail. If you start out with a lot then it might be too much if you decide to develop and expand on more of those first ideas. I know this from experience. My infographics are usually as dense as pound cake but lacking simplicity.

Final thoughts

Infographics can either be kick butt or you can get your butt kicked. I always spend too much time on mine because I like to make sure everything is perfect. However, learn from me and my mistakes. Less is more and simpler is better. I’m not saying all infographics have to be short and sweet (because mine definitely are not); they just have to be clear and concise.

I think infographics are very useful. Great infographic makers are a dying breed of creative artists. It takes a lot of determination and patience to make a really good infographic that educates and resonates with others.

Surprise: here is my latest infographic for some inspiration!
