Remember the old saying, “There’s no I in team?” Or how about, “Make sure to put the we in manpower!”?
Well today I have a new one for you.
“Protect the I in privacy.”
With the increasing use of online web services, privacy and security are becoming more pertinent and important to protect.
How will privacy issues affect future communication professionals?
Communication professionals are at the forefront of virtual commercialism. They are the pioneers of information, data, stories, advertisement, etc. So naturally, privacy issues will affect them (and they do).
So what can be done about this?
- One way to help enhance online privacy and security is to create and keep strong passwords.
This one may sound simple but a good way future communication professionals can protect their private data is to have strong passwords.
An effective way to do this is by creating a random set or letters, numbers, and special characters.
If you’re someone like me who has a hard time keeping up with dates and numbers, then keep a password journal or develop a random password that makes sense. This link can show you how. Below is example of one method the link mentions called the “The Password Phrase method.”

Will how we view privacy laws foster public discourse and a democratic society?
My short, unpopular opinion answer is no. I am under the impression that the public is becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of privacy laws. Although the general public may not think twice about posting information or about where their data is going once they fill out a survey, this does not mean that they do not care.
Current research indicates that Americans are becoming more aware and worried about their personal data and how it is being used.
For democracy to grow there must be trust, tolerance, and cooperation.
Yet according to research, 79% of Americans say they are not too or not at all confident that companies will admit mistakes and take responsibility if they misuse or compromise personal information.
So what does that mean for the future?
Well, that is for you to decide.
If you want to learn more about this subject, I’ve included a TED Talk below that answers the question, “What will a future without secrets look like?”
Today I am grateful for great weather. Gotta love a cool breeze and sunshine!
