2020 Vision: A commitment to make my content more accessible

If you wear glasses, you know what I’m talking about. Noting is worse than when you forget to put them on or don’t have your contacts near by. It’s like driving with foggy windows!

  • I aim to not only learn more about accessibility but also to incorporate it into my content. Consider this my New Year’s Resolution!

Ways to incorporate accessibility

There are a few ways I will do this:

  • Make good use of headings

This one may seem obvious but headings can be a game changer for those who use a screen reader to get their content. Headings make information flow more logically.

  • Use alt text with images

Sometimes images may not show up or those with vision impairment cannot see them. Using alt text will provide my viewers with the info they missed from not being able to access the photo!

  • Identify language of text

Obviously not everyone speaks English. This is why using a screen reader with the ability to encompass multiple languages is essential for my site.

  • Using tables to organize information

Communicating relationships between column and row headers and the data cells within their scope will be extremely helpful for my viewers!

Recognizing the importance of color

Color blindness affects 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women so being conscious of what colors I choose for my site can improve its accessibility.

Here are some examples of some colors that either work or don’t for those with colorblindness.

I cannot think of an example of access and accessibility that has not been presented to me. All in all, making my site more accessible is in my best interest as a blogger and yours too!
